OTC's Mining Pump Booster Setup

Case Study

Recap:  A mining site found their Vertical Turbine pumps hard to service and identify. TP Pump suggested using Grundfos Boosterpaq with four (4) Grundfos XL series CRN185 pumps. The above-ground system resulted in a quieter site and easy maintenance.

Our Challenge

There was an application problem at a mining site in New Mexico, and the customer reached out to TP Pump for a solution.

The customer had a series of aging Vertical Turbine pumps that over time, had been replaced by a collection of 3 – 4 different manufacturers. Over the years, booster cans were modified to adapt to the varying manufacturers’ needs, and documented information was not ideal. Every time maintenance was needed, it grew more difficult and a major burden on the customer.

Despite the difficulty they had, the customer had become accustomed to various vertical turbines. Changing to a new product took working with engineers, users, and maintenance teams.TP Pump had to draw from success with this style of pumps in other applications throughout New Mexico and voice confidence in the belief that these pumps could be a great alternative to traditional canned turbines.

Ultimately, TP Pump was entrusted to help the customer select equipment and was the supplier on this project. The CRXL pumps used on Grundfos BoosterPaQ pre-packaged systems are not only new, but one of the few pumps of this design in the sizes this system required.

Our Solution

Install Grundfos BoosterPaQ with four (4) Grundfos XL series CRN185 pumps that would put the pumps above the surface, making maintenance and identifying any issues significantly easier.

Pumps move water from one storage tank to another over a distance of 1.5 miles, up an elevation gain of nearly 300’.

Results

The startup went well and most importantly, the customer was happy. The pumps were running so quietly and smoothly, in fact, that people onsite had to walk closer to see that they were actually running!
